James Toseland looking forward to Bridgestone debut
By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
25 November 2008 10:11
British rider James Toseland is back on track in Jerez tomorrow (Wednesday), eagerly anticipating his debut on Bridgestone tyres at the Spanish circuit.
The 27-year-old missed the post-season test session in Valencia but will return to action on his 2008 spec Tech 3 Yamaha YZR-M1 for a two-day session in Jerez that gets underway tomorrow.
Get all the latest MotoGP news
Toseland, who claimed six top six finishes in his rookie campaign while riding for Michelin, told MCN: “I am really looking forward to it. It was a shame that we couldn’t have tested in Valencia and tried the tyres there because I believe from what everybody was saying was that the tyres all worked well.
"There was obviously some concern that a one-make tyre would suit some bikes and styles and not others, but across the board everybody seemed really pleased with the product that Bridgestone supplied. I’m really pleased that Valentino (Rossi) pushed as hard as he did to get on the Bridgestones in 2008 because Yamaha has had the opportunity to develop the bike on those tyres.
"That will really give us a head start for next year with the base setting because I’m going to be on the ’08 bike but with a standard Bridgestone setting.”
Asked what he expected from the tyres having observed the performance of the Bridgestone tyres in 2009, Toseland said: “From what I’ve seen, the initial braking point was quite similar but they were very confident braking into the apex. That was really noticeable and everybody says the front tyre is very good.”
The test will also give Toseland his first chance to work with new crew chief Gary Reynders, who will join the double World Superbike champion after a controversial split from Colin Edwards at the end of the season.
The move leaves Edwards teaming up with Guy Coulon after Toseland requested a change because of communication issues with Coulon during the 2008 campaign.

Re: James Toseland
Toseland to perform at NEC show
Tuesday, 25 November 2008
Tech 3 Yamaha rider packs diary with solo and band sets.
Hot-tailing it from Jerez to Birmingham at the end of this week, James Toseland will be once again mixing business with pleasure at the Carole Nash International Motorcycle and Scooter Show, as part of a three-date `residency´ with band Crash in the NEC venue.
The Tech 3 Yamaha rider´s band will be performing on Sunday November 30th, Saturday December 6th and Sunday December 7th, and Toseland will also be making solo performances behind his trusty piano on Wednesday December 3rd and Thursday December 4th.
`I´m really looking forward to playing at this year´s NEC Motorcycle Show; it combines my two main passions of motorcycling and music. It´s fantastic to have a sponsor who provides me with a keyboard and asks me to perform with the band as a work commitment!´ says the Briton. `Motorcycling enthusiasts are always our most supportive and vocal crowds, so we should hopefully generate a fantastic atmosphere on the Yamaha stand.´
The motorshow runs from November 28th to December 7th, and will count both Toseland and 2008 MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi´s Yamaha M1 bikes as star exhibits.

Jerez test: James Toseland sixth on Bridgestone debut
By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
26 November 2008 18:24
British rider James Toseland made an encouraging start to his Bridgestone career in Jerez today, the Tech 3 Yamaha rider clocking the sixth quickest time on a chilly first day.
Get the latest news from the Jerez test
Toseland ended with a best time of 1.41.539 as he completed 50 laps on a big day for the former double World Superbike champion.
Not only was Toseland getting his first outing on Bridgestone rubber following the introduction of a controversial single tyre rule for 2009, but he also linked up with new crew chief Gary Reynders for the first time. Reynders joined Toseland in a controversial move having worked with team-mate Colin Edwards during 2008.
Get all the latest MotoGP news
Toseland’s best time was less than 0.2s slower than the Texan today, with the 27-year-old Sheffield rider 2.014s slower than quickest rider Dani Pedrosa.
Using his 2008 spec YZR-M1 featuring a much shorter wheelbase to move in the direction that Yamaha will focus on for its 2009 contender, Toseland told MCN: “It was a good day but it took a while for me to get into the pace because we have gone to a setting that was used by Valentino (Rossi) on the Bridgestones. The bike is quite a bit shorter and I needed some time to get used to it because it is quite a bit different to what I’ve been on.
"This is way that Yamaha is going for the balance of the bike next season, so in half a day I’m already pretty much up to speed with the direction they are taking. That’s the direction Yamaha is taking, so I’ve got to make it work and I feel we have already made a lot of progress. But when I felt comfortable I did about five or six 41s on the trot at the end, so I’m quite pleased.
"Colin was much stronger than me here at the race a few months back and this is one of his best tracks, but I’m not too far behind him and that is a good sign. I’m not sure what I can say about the tyres but the front is pretty incredible and there is a considerable difference to what I was on before. The feedback it gives is incredible.”

Jerez test: James Toseland confident after Bridgestone debut
By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
28 November 2008 09:52
James Toseland ended his Bridgestone debut in positive mood at Jerez, the 27-year-old finishing ninth on the final day of track action in 2008.
The British rider clocked a best time of 1.40.752 on the final day, which was good enough for a top ten finish and not the lowly 12th that the official timesheets stated.
Get all the latest from the Jerez test
An error had Toseland down as only posting a 1.41.740 as he slowly but surely built up his confidence on the Japanese rubber, having spent his rookie premier class campaign on Michelin rubber.
Get all the latest MotoGP news
Riding a modified 2008 Yamaha YZR-M1 with a much shorter wheelbase set-up pioneered by Valentino Rossi last season, Toseland’s best time came late in the day on his 44th of 45 laps completed.
He was actually a full second faster on the final day, and not 0.2s slower than his first day time as the timesheets suggested.
The Tech 3 Yamaha rider, working with new crew chief Gary Reynders for the first time, told MCN: “We have only had two different fronts and two different rears and that keeps it nice and simple and also allows you to concentrate a lot more on the set-up of the bike. You can adapt the bike quicker to the tyres.
"The feedback from the tyres is impressive, particularly with braking stability on the front. For me it gives overall good feedback from trail braking right into the middle of the corner, so I’m pleased in that area. I did 26 laps on the same rear today and I was still in the 41s, which I’m pleased with.”
Toseland, who was sixth quickest yesterday, also tried a new braking style today to try and help him for his second season in MotoGP in 2009.
He added: “I’m braking harder on the initial braking point. I wasn’t braking enough and by braking later, it was costing me corner speed, and that’s what these 800s are all about.”

Re: James Toseland
so i havent been happy with JT for the pass few days thats why i havent written on here
Wright: Toseland will be top five in '09.
Colin Wright has labelled James Toseland's maiden season in MotoGP as ‘outstanding' before predicting he will finish inside the top five overall in 2009.
The two-time World Superbike Champion made his long-awaited graduation to the premier class in 2008 with Tech 3 Yamaha, the Brit going on to win plaudits for his early season efforts, even if his form faded as the year wore on.
The British rider would end the season a fair 11th overall with a best result of sixth place, achieved a total of six times. However, while his fall at Donington Park and lacklustre form at Indianapolis raised doubts about his ability to get the set-up right on the M1, Toseland's performance has come in for significant praise from Wright, team manager of GSE Racing.
GSE Racing is credited for giving Toseland his big chance, offering him a spot on the 2001 World Superbike grid despite having never managed a top five result in either British Superbikes or World Supersport.
Going on to win the 2004 and 2007 World Superbike title, Wright believes that, given how difficult the switch from Superbikes to MotoGP can be, Toseland has performed better than people give him credit for.
“He was outstanding this season,” he told Crash.net. “I didn't expect him to do as well as he did, although James would have wanted to go better than he did - that is just what James is like.
“He was in at the deep end, just like he was in World Superbikes, so anyone who says you can go from World Superbikes to MotoGP and do the business is wrong. It just doesn't happen.”
Wright uses the example of Toseland's Tech 3 team-mate Colin Edwards, who arrived in MotoGP regarded as one of the finest Superbike racers of all-time following his 2002 title win. However, in the six ensuing MotoGP seasons and more than 100 races, the American is yet to win a race.
“Look at the years Colin Edwards has been trying… He went out of Superbikes pretty much at the top of his game, but he has hardly ever been at the top of MotoGP, so in comparison Toseland has done a remarkable job.”
Although he was overshadowed by fellow rookies Jorge Lorenzo and Andrea Dovizioso, both of whom graduated from the 250GP class, Toseland's performances in the early part of the season ensured he will be back on the MotoGP grid in 2009.
With the benefit of greater knowledge, particularly where set-up is concerned, Wright has high hopes for his former protégé, predicting that he will be challenging for a top five finish overall.
“Next year, when they are all on equal tyres, James will be even stronger, so I expect him to finish in the top five next season,” he added. “He will probably say he wants to be in the top three, but the thing with MotoGP is the harder you try, the harder it is, and that has been proven this year.
“In times when he has struggled with set-up, he has pushed harder and fallen off, or gone backwards, but what he has to do now is find the consistency he had in World Superbikes and he will be in the top five.”
