Valentino Rossi content with second place
By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
17 October 2008 11:16
MotoGP world champion Valentino Rossi said he was content with his second place at the end of the first day of action in Sepang today.
The Fiat Yamaha rider set a best time of 2.02.693 to finish just 0.171s adrift of Tech 3 Yamaha rider Colin Edwards.
The Italian was marginally slower in this afternoon’s second session, with several minutes lost to a light drizzle that hit the Sepang circuit, venue for the penultimate round of the 2008 world championship.
Rossi said: “This was a good day for us because we were fastest this morning and then second this afternoon behind Colin. I like this track a lot; it’s difficult, technical and wide and it’s possible to have a lot of fun riding a MotoGP bike here.
"It’s a different feeling compared to the tests here pre-season, because the bike has changed a lot since then and we’ve also learnt a lot more about the tyres; it’s good to see how much we have improved everything since then.
"Our pace today is already good so I think we have a good potential this weekend, but it’s definitely possible to improve some more and make our setting better. We need to work on one or two small things. I have a strong motivation for a good result here!”

Stoner looking for big improvement
By Matthew Birt
MotoGP
17 October 2008 11:53
Former world champion Casey Stoner had a troublesome start to the Malaysian GP in Sepang.
Get the latest MotoGP news
The Aussie, who celebrated his 23rd birthday yesterday, finished third on the combined free practice timesheets today, with his factory Ducati again troubled by a rear pumping issue.
Stoner, who dominated his home race in Phillip Island earlier this month, ended with a best time of 2.02.970 to finish 0.303s adrift of fastest man Colin Edwards.
He said: “Today was annoying. This afternoon’s session was ridiculous because it was constantly spitting with rain and most of the time too much to really push or get any information back.
"It was quite a frustrating afternoon but I hope with the couple of laps we got some info from we can improve the bike for tomorrow. Other than that it was a difficult day and the bike is not working perfectly. We had similar issues in Phillip Island but by Sunday we’d worked them out, so hopefully it will be the same here. The bike is pumping again on the rear.
"We have struggled with his construction tyre all year and there are only a few tracks that we have to use it on for this temperature range. This construction, all the other bikes seem to work a little bit better and we are not getting enough weight on the rear, so it caused the bike to pump and move.
"I hope we can find a solution but at the moment it is very difficult to ride. This morning it was pumping a lot and this afternoon was the same, but we only got a couple of good laps in so we can’t really understand what is going on.”
Stoner denied that tricky track conditions had contributed to the problem, with heavy rain yesterday followed by a light drizzle in this afternoon’s second session.
He said: “I don’t think the track condition is that bad but it was very hot this morning and with so much rain it is probably washing the track a lot.”

No worries in Malaysia for Rossi and Lorenzo
No worries in Malaysia for Rossi and Lorenzo
Friday, 17 October 2008
Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo were satisfied with their day´s work in practice for the Polini Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix.
Two weeks on from the last round in Australia, the `no worries´ outlook to life continued in the Fiat Yamaha garage on Friday in Sepang. Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo featured in the overall top five, with the duo expecting to qualify on the front row for Sunday´s race.
Valentino Rossi - Second
`This was a good day for us because we were fastest this morning and then second this afternoon behind Colin. I like this track a lot; it´s difficult, technical and wide and it´s possible to have a lot of fun riding a MotoGP bike here. It´s a different feeling compared to the tests here pre-season, because the bike has changed a lot since then and we´ve also learnt a lot more about the tyres; it´s good to see how much we have improved everything since then. Our pace today is already good so I think we have a good potential this weekend, but it's definitely possible to improve some more and make our setting better. We need to work on one or two small things. I have a strong motivation for a good result here.´
Jorge Lorenzo - Fifth
`I felt good here today! Unfortunately this afternoon we changed a lot of things and we didn´t have quite enough grip with the final tyre, so we weren´t able to improve on the time from this morning, but anyway we know what the problem is so we´re not so worried. I think I can be competitive here and that I can fight for the front row tomorrow. It´s very hot but it´s still great fun to ride the M1 here, you can slide the rear, which is a fantastic feeling on these bikes, and I really enjoyed myself today. I hope that this can continue for the rest of the weekend.´
