Pedrosa picks up the pace for top time at Jerez test
Wednesday, 26 November 2008

Spaniard faster than own race record lap as final test of 2008 opens.

The MotoGP `big guns´ waited until after lunch to appear on track in Jerez on Wednesday, but when they eventually emerged they did so with a bang. Dani Pedrosa, Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo –the highest placing riders from 2008 in action at the latest official test- made up the top trio on the first of a two-day residency.

Pedrosa´s late appearance on track did little to hamper his progress, as he took the new Honda RC212V around the circuit where he earned the first of his two race victories this past season with a 1´39.525 lap. The Repsol Honda man was the only rider to go round in under 1´40, besting Rossi and Lorenzo as he had done at last March´s Grand Prix in southern Spain. Pedrosa was comprehensively faster than his own race record from that round.

Pedrosa split his time between the 2009 spec Honda and a 2008 model, although his quickest time came with the updated chassis and engine of the latest machine.

Rossi´s time of 1´40.135 was over half a second slower than that of his rival, whilst Lorenzo was a further second back on the pacesetting duo in his second test with Bridgestone tyres. Despite the move to a single rubber supplier for 2009, Rossi and Lorenzo´s Fiat Yamaha garage remains divided by the wall put in place at the beginning of the year.

Colin Edwards and James Toseland were also looking to adapt their Yamaha M1 machinery and riding styles to new tyres, beginning their first test with Bridgestone for the Tech 3 Yamaha team. Having exchanged chief mechanics for the upcoming campaign, the duo´s results at the end of the day were remarkably similar; both rode in the mid 1´41´s in the top six, with Edwards the faster of the two. San Carlo Honda Gresini´s Alex de Angelis separated the Anglo-American connection on the timesheet.

All Ducati riders had the chance to ride with a version of the Desmosedici GP9, Niccolo Canepa the fastest for the Italian factory in ninth. Factory rider Nicky Hayden was assisted by Casey Stoner in the garage as both looked to define the direction for the 2009 project.

Conditions in Jerez were cold but sunny, and riders remained on track to make the most of the last remaining light between 5pm and 6pm. Testing concludes tomorrow, before the winter test embargo comes into place on December 1st.

Jerez test: Dani Pedrosa content with second

Spaniard Dani Pedrosa said he was satisfied with his first serious test on Honda’s 2009 RC212V prototype despite playing second fiddle to Valentino Rossi again.

A best lap of 1.39.447 on his last lap was still 0.018s slower than the Fiat Yamaha rider as the triple world champion concentrated on assessing a new chassis in the limited track time that was available on the final day.

“We worked to improve the behaviour of the machine during braking and in the turns. The only problem was the weather, which meant that we didn’t get so much time on the bike today.

"We had to wait for the track to dry, so we didn’t start until 2pm, and we finished at five. But we worked well and got the most out of those three hours.

"I found a good feeling with the bike this afternoon, so now we can sit down and analyse all the data we’ve gathered here in order to be ready for our next testing appointment at Sepang next year, “said Pedrosa.

Paddock Press: De Rozas on Pedrosa´s 2008 season
Wednesday, 24 December 2008

Repsol Honda rider´s season in focus as Paddock Press series continues.

Dani Pedrosa was once again in the mix for the MotoGP World Championship in 2008, although for the third consecutive year the Spaniard fell just short of the ultimate honour in motorcycle racing. His season is reviewed for Paddock Press by Emilio Perez de Rozas, journalist for El Periodico, who reiterates the inopportune timing of Pedrosa´s Sachsenring crash.

`There were so many difficulties after that fall; he was injured, had to rehabilitate, suffered from the tyre problems and then took time to adjust to new rubber,´ says de Rozas.

`Despite this, I wouldn´t criticise him for pushing so hard on the early laps in Germany. To be champion at this level you have to take risks, even to that extent.´

Pedrosa: `Pressure comes completely from me´
Thursday, 22 January 2009

Expectations for 2009 self-imposed for Repsol Honda star.

Repsol Honda rider Dani Pedrosa has long been regarded as a title aspirant over the course of his three-year premier class career, and has justified expectations by never finishing outside the top three in the overall standings.

Speaking at the Bread&Butter show in Barcelona -which he attended alongside Repsol Honda team sponsor GAS with Claudio Grotto, CEO of Grotto SpA- on Thursday, the Spaniard acknowledged the onus on him to take the World Championship in 2009, but added that the obligation was entirely self-imposed.

`The pressure is completely mine. I try very hard and feel that I have to push myself,´ said the former 125cc and 250cc titlist. `I also have many people behind me, pushing for me to do well, and I am happy to have that.´

Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Pedrosa does not expect the competition to be any less difficult than in the past.

`It´s going to be tough; all of my rivals will be trying harder than last year, and the races will be tougher and with more fight. Valentino (Rossi) was the best last year, and he will be the reference point for us right from the start. My new teammate (Andrea Dovizioso) is likely to improve after a good rookie season, and he will become more powerful with experience.

`I´ve had a good break, rested a little, and healed my injuries. Now I feel good and excited about testing.´
